Amidst all the criticisms leveled at 49er's Quarterback Colin Kaepernick for refusing to stand up during the national anthem due to America's alleged oppression against people of color, blind obedience to the Democratic party cannot be one of them.
Interviewing reporters on Sunday, Kaepernick expressed disapproval towards both GOP candidate Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Though his rhetoric toward the real-estate mogul was par for the course, calling Trump "openly racist," his disposition toward Hillary caused the most surprise, considering that black Americans support her by an overwhelming margin.
"You have Hillary, who has called black teens or black kids ‘super predators,'" said Kaepernick on Sunday. "You have Donald Trump, who is openly racist. We have a presidential candidate who has deleted emails and done things illegally and is a presidential candidate. That doesn’t make sense to me. If that was any other person, you’d be in prison."
Kaepernick then posed a question that many conservatives have been asking throughout this election cycled: "So what is this country really standing for?"
The national anthem is certainly one of them, something Mr. Kaepernick maintains he will refuse to stand for so long as this so-called systemic oppression of black Americans continues.
"I'll continue to sit. I'm gonna continue to stand with the people that are being oppressed," Kaepernick said. "To me, this is something that has to change. When there's significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it's supposed to represent and this country is representing people the way that it's supposed to, I'll stand."
