Why did God choose Jerusalem as His resting place? The Sages find two
revealing texts in the Bible that, when synthesized, teach us the value of
Jerusalem. Abraham was asked by God to sacrifice his son in order to prove his
allegiance to the Lord. This profound, inexplicable test took place on a
mountain which God called Mount Moriah, and which Abraham called 'Adonai
yir'eh,' because it is "the mount where the LORD is seen" (Genesis 22:14). A few
years earlier, Abraham showed the world his allegiance to his family, to justice
and to righteousness when he fought against the four kings and retrieved his
nephew Lot. After the battle, Melchizedek, the King of Shalem, went out to greet
Abraham and bless God (Genesis 14:18-20). When we join these two names, 'Yir'eh'
and 'Shalem,' we arrive at 'Yerushalayim,' the Hebrew name for Jerusalem. The
name expresses a harmony of man’s selfless actions towards God and towards
others.
