Jerusalem Inspiration

Today's verse from Isaiah not only emphasizes the importance of the Scriptures, but also declares that their source is the holy city of God in Zion. Zion is another name used to refer to holy city of Jerusalem and can be found throughout the Bible. On this holy day of Simchat Torah (the Joy of Torah) which follows the seven day Festival of Tabernacles, Jews can be found dancing through the streets clutching the Torah scrolls in their hands in celebration of God's greatest gift to the world, the Bible. Simchat Torah celebrates the finishing of the yearly reading of the Five Book of Moses and the beginning of the cycle anew. It is the perfect time to reconnect with the Bible and to study the sacred Book from the very first word of Genesis! The Israel Bible Reading Plan allows you to do just that, guiding you through a weekly Torah teaching in the context of Israel's importance to God's word.

The Israel Bible: The Five Books of Moses

This boxed set collects the Five Books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. In Jewish tradition, these first five books differ from the rest of the Bible in that they were dictated by God on Mount Sinai, and therefore are considered to have a special status within the holy books.

Jerusalem Daily Photo

Today's photograph taken by Yehoshua Halevi depicts a 'sofer', or scribe, writing the holy words of the Torah with a quill pen. Tonight, Jews all over the world will share in the joy of finishing the annual cycle of reading the Torah, on the holiday of "Simchat Torah" (the Joy of Torah). On this day all of the Torah scrolls are taken out and read from as well as danced with by members of the congregation.
