The protection of widows and orphans, the most vulnerable members of
society, is a value often emphasized in the Bible. In fact, the tithes collected
from the poor were given to them (Deuteronomy 26:12). For thousands of years,
Jewish courts appointed special guardians for orphans who would faithfully and
truthfully uphold their rights and inheritance, and the communities would gather
together to treat widows and orphans with generosity and understanding. Teachers
were permitted to chastise orphans "for their own good", but otherwise, they
must be treated with special kindness and consideration. Today, Colel Chabad
continues to observe this ancient Biblical commandment by providing a special
fund for the benefit of orphans and widows, helping them get education,
employment, and support from the community as well as giving financial and
material aid to the ones who need it most.
