Today, on the Shabbat of the intermediary days of Sukkot, called, 'sha-bbat
khol ha-mo-ed' , we read the Book of Koheleth, Ecclesiastes. Koheleth is the
title given to King
Solomon, who, although reigning over all of Israel, is called here, the “king in
Jerusalem”. Jerusalem was known as a city of wisdom, a place that lent itself to
understanding, as well as home to many sages. King Solomon wanted to add
validity to his work by emphasizing that the observations made in his book were
analyzed and approved by the wise residents of Jerusalem. In the modern era,
Jerusalem is still a locus of wisdom in the heart of the holy land.
