They can dish it out but they can't take it.
Celebrities can further detach themselves from reality with a new Twitter app that blocks "mean" tweets from "abusive" followers.
The app, dubbed "Engage," allows celebrities to ignore the little people and their insignificant tweets while still broadcasting their own announcements like what kind of pancakes they had for breakfast and their views on gun control. Breitbart reports:
“If reading Twitter makes you upset, but you still want to be able to broadcast the details of your latest juice cleanse, Engage may be the app for you."
In a review by The Verge, Casey Newton says that “Engage is for the celebrity who sees the value in tweeting, but would rather not pay attention to the broader conversation in the global town square.”
Well, that sounds about accurate.
The app is reportedly similar to one offered by Facebook, which allows public figures to find out when they're mentioned in the news. Now, social media can foster some rather disturbing dialogue amongst its less scrupulous users -- and we'd all like shielding from that - but it's ironic that the very platforms people use to amplify their fame are the ones they also want to selectively censor.
Creators of the Twitter app claim the product is really all about providing celebrities "analytics" tools. We say it's more about offering snowflakes a "safe space" from which to broadcast their thoughts and opinions while enjoying a never-ending flow of adulation without a smidgen of pushback. In other words, Twitter is helping celebrities become more out-of-touch with reality than they already are.
