Shabbat Inspiration

The voluntary meal-offering is comprised of flour, oil and frankincense. These ingredients are much less expensive than the animals brought for the other offerings. According to the Talmud, it is for this reason that the Hebrew word 'nefesh,' meaning soul, is used to refer to the person bringing this sacrifice as opposed to any of the other voluntary sacrifices.  For when a poor person chooses to give from his meager means to God, God considers it as if he is offering Him his soul. What matters to the Lord is not our material wealth, how much we have or even how much we give, it is the sincerity behind our actions that means most. When you give to the poor with true sincerity, you are really giving to God by caring for His creations. This holiday season, Meir Panim is going above and beyond to provide Israel's needy with festive meals, clothes and necessities.

Jerusalem Daily Photo

Today's Jerusalem photo by Yehoshua Halevi shows a very common sight during Sukkot in the holy city: a backyard sukkah, or booth, roofed with palm fronds and strung with decorations, festive lights and Israeli flags! These booths spring up on sidewalks, streets, and balconies, in parking lots, backyards, and front yards during the Festival!
