The Hebrew word for universe or world, is עולם, ‘olam.’ This is closely
related to the word נעלם, ‘ne’elam,’ meaning “hidden.” The phrase “God of the
Universe,” alludes to the fact that God is also King over that which is hidden
from us. It is no coincidence that Abraham refers to God through this term
after planting a tree. A tree has the visible trunk and branches as well as the
'hidden' roots which anchor it to the earth. Often it is through the more
discreet aspects of our lives that we see God's involvement most
fervently.
