In this verse, God is referred to as “The Merciful One” or מְרַחֲמָם /
me-ra-kha-maym in Hebrew. The Hebrew word for mercy, רחם / ra-KHAYM also means a
‘womb’ because of a mother’s natural mercy for her offspring. Isaiah is teaching
us that God will provide for us and show mercy just like a mother has great
compassion for her child. Every summer, Meir Panim runs wonderful camps for
underpriviledged kids, giving hungry and thirsty children who rarely have the
chance to run and play an opportunity to experience the joys of feeling provided
for, just as the Children of Israel did when God had mercy upon them and led
them to streams of water.
